More information about OsaSync

Outlook and OsaSync

In Outlook all Outlook items are stored in one .pst file and this file cannot be shared. The .pst file also cannot be synchronized on Windows by making it an offline file. Using file syncing software to sync the .pst file is also not a good idea and can cause corruption in the .pst file.

To go beyond these restrictions we developed OsaSync:
OsaSync enables the synchronizing of Outlook items between two or more .pst files on different computers.

Synchronizing

Synchronizing means:
Keeping an exact copy of your Outlook items on all machines. Every change to a contact, appointment or other Outlook item is carried through on the other machines.

This is very useful when you alternate working on a desktop computer and a laptop computer or when you work in a small office and want to use the same customer contacts folder as your colleagues or want to use a common Calendar.

Synchronization in OsaSync works fully automatically. An Outlook item is automatically synced when it is changed, deleted or created. You only need to prepare the folder for synchronization once when you start synchronizing for the first time. When a folder is prepared for synchronisation, the folder will be created by OsaSync on the other computers. If the folder already exists the folder contents will be merged on all computers.

Syncing over the internet

With OsaSync PRO 9.0 and up it is very easy to sync over the internet using a free Dropbox, Skydrive, Google Drive or other Cloud service account. OsaSync syncs the contents of Outlook by exchanging small files with the other computers in the sync group. These files can, in turn, be synced by the cloud service to other computers. In this way OsaSync does not need to connect to other computers.

OsaSync PRO also supports the configuration of OsaSync in Client-Server mode. In Client-Server mode it is also possible to sync computers over the internet via a FTP server account (you can use your FTP account offered by your Internet Service Provider so you do not have to run your own FTP server). This is the preferred way of syncing remote computers if you do not want to use a Cloud service.

Easy installation and configuration

Ever tried to install, configure and deploy Microsoft's Exchange server or IBM's lotus Domino? Then you are probably an IT-pro or someone with a high IQ and a lot of time...

A major design goal of OsaSync was to create a solution that is simple to install and configure. Everybody with a basic computer software understanding should be able to do this.

Installing OsaSync

After OsaSync has been downloaded to your computer it's enough to double click the setup file and follow the steps of the installation wizard. This works the same as 99% of other software installations.

Configuring OsaSync

Because using OsaSync involves the use of 2 or more computers OsaSync has to be 'told' about the other computers to communicate with. For this purpose we created the 'OsaSync connection wizard', a wizard that will guide you through the steps necessary for configuring OsaSync to share or synchronize outlook items with other computers.

This wizard can be run from within Outlook (from the 'OsaSync' - 'Options' menu) or as a standalone application from an icon on your desktop or from the windows start menu.

OsaSync can be configured in Cloud mode, Client-Server mode or Peer-to-Peer mode.

We recommend Cloud mode because the setup is easy, fast and secure.

Supports all windows versions

OsaSync runs in Outlook 2000, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016 but only in 32 bit Office versions.

OsaSync runs on all Windows versions. However OsaSync does NOT run in 64 bit Office versions. If you are running a 64 bit Windows version then install the 32 bit Office in order to be able to use OsaSync. Microsoft recommends 32 bit Office, also on 64 bit Windows, unless you are running very big (>2 Gb) spreadsheets.

You can use OsaSync together with cell phone syncing software.
